Nixon’s spokesperson has confirmed the news, telling People.com, “On May 27, 2012, Cynthia Nixon and her girlfriend, Christine Marinoni, were legally married in the state of New York.”

The nuptials came three years after the couple announced its engagement at a 2009 rally supporting same sex marriage in New York, which became the sixth state in the U.S. to allow gay unions last June (11).

During their engagement, Nixon told how she hoped to wed in her home state, explaining, “We’re not gonna wait forever for New York, we’re trying to get New York to get its act together but if we have to we’ll go somewhere else. But ideally we’d like to do it at home.”

The newlyweds have been together since 2004. Marinoni gave birth to their son Max Ellington Nixon-Marinoni in 2001, while Nixon has two kids from her previous relationship to Danny Mozes.
