Dacre Montgomery told to ‘lose weight’ to be successful

Dacre Montgomery has taken to social media to encourage fans to chase their dreams.
The 24-year-old shot to fame in 2017 when he landed the role of Billy Hargrove in the hit Netflix science fiction series Stranger Things. But opening up in a candid Instagram post on Monday (22Jul19), the star admitted success didn’t come easy to him.
“When I was a kid, I was lost. I had a really tough time in school,” he wrote, alongside an old high school portrait. “I was a big kid who loved drama. I never got passing grades, I wasn’t a popular or gifted sports player. Girls were never interested in me. I suffered from anxiety at a young age. I was distracted and I wasn’t focused. But I had a dream, I was lucky – I knew what I wanted to do. And every night I went home and I focused on THAT.”
The star went on to detail key milestones in his life, including failing his high school drama exams when he was 15, being told he needed to lose weight at 16, and being ordered to leave drama school at 18.
But the actor and poet insisted he never let the negative comments get him down, adding: “‘I lost weight, I went to drama school and I never stopped wanting it, I never stopped being curious. I never let the failures get me down. Because I believed in myself and I never let anyone tell me otherwise. Do not be afraid to fail. Go out there and get it!”
Season three of stranger things is streaming on Netflix now.
