Dame Judi Dench upset she can no longer drive

Dame Judi Dench was left traumatised after her degenerative eye disease forced her to give up driving.
The 84 year old admits her age-related macular degeneration has started to hamper her enjoyment of watching movies and she now has problems recognising people at parties, but she tells the Radio Times that giving up driving was a real test for her.
“It was one of the most traumatic moments of my life,” she tells the new issue of the magazine, admitting she knew it was time to give up her keys: “I just know I’ll kill somebody if I get behind the wheel of a car now,” she adds.
And her poor sight is so bad she can no longer read a newspaper, with Judi adding, “I can’t do the crossword, I can’t read a book”.
“But, you know, you cope,” the Skyfall star tells the magazine. “I’ve got people who read to me and coach me with my lines. On a film set you learn where everything is. It’s OK if you can get away with it. It’s all acting, after all. Fooling people. It’s what I do.
“What worries me is some people don’t know, and they think, ‘Ooh, get her – she cut me dead!’ when I didn’t see them at all.”
