Danai Gurira: ‘Not exercising chips away at my wellbeing’

Danai Gurira stays fit for her mental wellbeing as well as her physical.

The Black Panther actress stuns on the cover of the new issue of Women’s Health, showing off her gym honed physique in an Off-White swimsuit.

Talking about her attitude to fitness, Danai admitted: “If I haven’t worked out, if I haven’t exercised and connected with my body in some way, it chips away at my feeling of wellbeing.”

She also dished on her exercise routine, which involves four sessions a week with trainer AJ Fisher, as well as yoga classes and jogging with her dog Papi.

And the 40-year-old’s hard work has certainly paid off.

“Sometimes it’s so intense I can’t remember what we did,” she said of her time with AJ, who she met through one of her Walking Dead co-stars.

“It’s not like, ‘Oh, I’m in so much pain from that.’ It’s like ‘Oh, I feel the strength in my core, I feel the strength in my back’,” she added of feeling sore afterwards.

Their sessions revolve around circuit training, Pilates moves, paired muscle training and glute workouts, and while training, Danai wears a heart rate monitor and she often uses resistance bands, which she also always travels with so she can work out wherever and whenever.

The actress is proud of her muscles, and says more women should “tap into” their strength.
“As women, we’re not always encouraged to find the full extent of our physical power. There’s something so exciting about tapping into that part of ourselves,” she smiled.
