Danny Boyle and Banksy Staging ‘Alternative Nativity’ Play in Palestine

Filmmaker Danny Boyle is teaming with Banksy to film a Nativity play in Bethlehem in the occupied Palestinian territories.

In March (17) the reclusive graffiti artist opened The Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem, a town in Palestine occupied by Israeli forces, enclosed by a huge security wall and checkpoints controlling passage in and out of the city.

This Christmas season (17), the artist is aiming to bring festive cheer to the area, which according to Christian tradition is the birthplace of Jesus Christ, by staging a Nativity play in the hotel’s car park.
To help him with the production and to film it for a BBC Two documentary, Banksy has roped in the Oscar-winning director.

According to a press release, the show, dubbed ‘The Alternativity‘, will follow Danny as he travels across the Middle East to the occupied Palestinian territories and assembles an unorthodox cast and crew – overcoming authorities’ restrictions to stage a successful play.

BBC Two Controller Patrick Holland says, “It is brilliant for BBC Two to be working with Danny Boyle, Banksy and the creative team who together are making this alternative nativity. It promises to be a challenging and provocative exploration of a story of that speaks to young and old alike.”

The documentary will air in the U.K. on 17 December (17).
