Director Darren Aronofsky has paid tribute to his Black Swan production designer Therese Deprez following her death on Tuesday (19Dec17).
DePrez passed away at her home in New York City at the age of 52 following a battle with breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in May 2015. Her death was announced by Black Swan graphic designer Derrick Kardos, a friend and frequent collaborator, on Facebook.
Aronofsky, who was nominated for a directing Oscar for the 2010 psychological horror, paid tribute on Twitter by sharing a picture of DePrez and writing, “heartbroken to lose Thérèse. i begged her for years to work with me but our schedules never lined up. then on black swan it finally happened. she was an incredible artist, collaborator, and friend. sending love to her family and the nyc film community. we lost one of our legends.”
He also shared old footage showing him and DePrez discussing design elements and wrote, “making black swan with the great Thérèse DePrez. thank you for your genius.”
DePrez was most widely recognized for her work on the film, for which she received an Art Directors Guild excellence in production design award.
She also worked on Stoker, Summer of Sam, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and High Fidelity, while her most recent credits were on 2012’s Premium Rush and 2014’s The Drop.
