Moviemaker David Ayer regrets not making more of Jared Leto’s The Joker in Suicide Squad.
The director was criticized for not making Batman’s arch foe the main villain in the 2016 movie, and now it seems he agrees with fans who wanted to see more Leto.
In a candid chat with one of his Twitter followers, Ayer confessed he “agonise (sic)” over his decision to make Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress Suicide Squad’s number one villain, adding, “Yes. Joker should have been main bad guy.”
In fact, Leto’s The Joker was confined to the supporting cast, while his partner in crime, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn stood out, and recently landed a leading role in a DC Comics movie spin-off.
Many comic book fans were disappointed as they expected to see a lot more of The Joker.
But Leto is hoping to reprise the character and have a much bigger part in another DC film.
Earlier this year (17) the Oscar winner shot down reports suggesting he never wants to play the character again, because he was far from happy his part in the film was cut to a small supporting role.
The actor spoke out about the drama, suggesting he didn’t realize his villainous character would only briefly appear in the movie when he signed on to play The Joker, but asked about the role during an appearance on the Kyle and Jackie O show, he said, “It was an incredible experience. Everybody was amazing. Margot Robbie (is) one of the nicest people, one of the best actresses I’ve ever worked with, and I really loved working with her.
“I thought the scenes and what we did together was some of the most fun I’ve ever had on a set before. But everything’s great in that world, and I’m really proud to be a part of it.”
