David Hasselhoff hit the gym for six weeks after he learned he’d be sharing a scene with ripped Dwayne Johnson in the big screen version of Baywatch.
The 64-year-old actor admits he was intimidated by the thought of appearing alongside the former wrestler in for the film, which was inspired by the legendary beach TV series, in which The Hoff starred, and began working out rigorously to prepare for his cameo.
“The first thing I did was get in the gym for six weeks,” he told the Entertainment Tonight at the film’s Miami, Florida premiere on Saturday (13May17) “I had to. I said, ‘If I’m gonna take a picture with that guy… he’s a man and a half, you know? But it was all right, I felt good!”
In the comedy, Johnson plays lifeguard Mitch Buchannon – the character Hasselhoff portrayed on the show.
The 64-year-old also revealed that the film features much more adult content than the series, which became a massive hit with audiences 26 years ago.
“It’s a different movie, you know. When I saw it, I wasn’t expecting it to be Baywatch so I really wasn’t that unprepared and I liked it,” Hasselhoff said. “It was funny, it was different and the fact that it’s R-rated, I said, ‘Oh, they’re kind of going for it’.”
Though the star has been supportive of the project and anticipates it being a box office success, he doesn’t feel the film adaptation fully captures the magic of the original series.
“I saw the movie and I said, ‘This is gonna make a lot of money, but it’s still not Baywatch,” he explained. You can’t re-create David Hasselhoff.”
The highly anticipated film also stars Zac Efron, Priyanka Chopra, Alexandra Daddario, and Kelly Rohrbach, and features a cameo from TV series siren Pamela Anderson.
