Demi Lovato earns new degree in jiu-jitsu

Pop star Demi Lovato has been given reason to celebrate after earning a promotion in her martial arts training.
The Sorry Not Sorry hitmaker has been working on perfecting her fight skills for years, but she has thrown herself into jiu-jitsu in recent months, ever since suffering an apparent drug overdose last summer (Jul18).
The Brazilian martial art appears to have helped Demi, who is sober again, get her fitness back on track, and on Wednesday (20Mar19), she took to her Instagram Story timeline to share her latest achievement.
“2nd degree blue belt!!!!” she captioned a photo of the new stripe added to her belt, before giving a shout out to her instructor, Chris Light. “Thank you @1chrislight!! You’re the best!!!”.
Demi then showed off a handwritten note he had given her to mark the personal achievement, which read: “Earned. Not given.”
“This means the world to me and I couldn’t be happier,” she wrote beside the note. “Brazilian jiu jitsu is a passion of mine and I can’t wait to learn more and more.”
“Thank you @1chrislight for teaching me so much,” the singer added. “I can’t believe how far I’ve come since working together. You’re a legend!!”
Demi, 26, received her blue belt in August, 2017 and, according to International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) rules, must remain in that class for a minimum of two years before progressing to purple, the third of seven achievement levels.
The star has previously credited her mixed martial arts training as a form of therapy for her: “I feel the most confident when I’m in the gym, whenever I’m training, whether it’s boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, jiu-jitsu,” she told Us Weekly.
