Denis Villeneuve Leads the Race to Direct Cleopatra Epic

The man behind the much-anticipated Blade Runner sequel is considering traveling to ancient Egypt to tackle Angelina Jolie’s Cleopatra.

Celebrated director Denis Villeneuve is circling Sony Pictures’ epic about the Egyptian queen, which has had Jolie attached for years, according to Deadline.

Based on Stacy Schiff’s bestselling biography and produced by Hollywood heavyweights Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal, Cleopatra has hooked James Cameron, Paul Greengrass, and David Fincher in recent years – and now it’s Villeneuve’s turn to take a look at the potential blockbuster.

It is not clear if Jolie is still on board to play the queen – a role which has been portrayed on the big and small screen in the past by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Leonor Varela, Monica Bellucci, Vivien Leigh, and Claudette Colbert.
