Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Despacito has become the first video to reach four billion views on YouTube.
The video has now beaten Wiz Khalifa’s 2015 video for See You Again, currently at 3.15 billion views, and Psy’s Gangnam Style, which has 2.97 billion views.
Since being posted on YouTube on 12 January (17), the Despacito video, which was shot in Spanish and without Justin Bieber’s additional verses, has gone from strength to strength.
Sharing news of the incredible achievement, Luis took to Twitter to thank fans for their support, writing: “Thank you for supporting family. Thanks Puerto Rico.”
It’s the latest in a long string of records the track has set. It set the Vevo record for the most views of a Spanish-language video in 24 hours, with 5.4 million hits, as well as becoming the fastest video to reach 200 million, two billion and three billion views.
It also became the second longest-running number one on Hot Latin Songs chart, after sitting in the top spot for 35 consecutive weeks. However, J Balvin and Willy William’s Mi Gente, featuring Beyonce, finally dethroned the song from the number one position after spending 11 weeks behind Fonsi’s summer hit.
