Despicable Me 2 vanquishes Man of Steel at U.K. box office

Animated adventure Despicable Me 2 has won a battle with Superman to take the top spot at the U.K. box office. Steve Carell’s cartoon caper, a sequel to the 2010 original, pulled in a massive $22.9 million (£14.8 million) in Britain over the weekend (28-30Jun13) – $5.6 million (£3.6 million) more than Superman blockbuster Man of Steel made in its opening weekend last month (Jun13).
Henry Cavill’s superhero film dropped into second place with earnings of $3.8 million (£2.4 million), pushing its total U.K. ticket sales to $40.6 million (£26.2 million) in the three weeks since its release.
Zombie movie World War Z fell into third with takings of $3.8 million (£2.4 million), while Seth Rogen’s star-studded apocalyptic comedy This Is the End debuted in fourth with $2.2 million (£1.4 million).
Jason Statham’s latest film Redemption, released as under the title Hummingbird in the U.K., entered in fifth place making a paltry $320,433 (£206,731).
