Rupert Sanders thinks his life would be boring if he didn’t make mistakes.

The director is gearing up for the release of his latest feature, Ghost in the Shell, which hits cinemas from Wednesday (29Mar17). And while there is plenty to talk about concerning the anime adaptation including the ‘whitewashing’ row over Scarlett Johansson’s casting in the lead role, 46-year-old Rupert is still fielding questions about his 2012 affair with actress Kristen Stewart, 26.

“You never know what’s coming in life,” he told Britain’s Metro newspaper. “Around every corner there’s something unexpected, and that’s life. You just have to brush yourself off and continue moving forward the best you can. Everyone makes mistakes. I am bound to make more mistakes and I wouldn’t expect my life to be exciting if I didn’t.”

Rupert was married to model Liberty Ross at the time of the affair, and Kristen was dating her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson. They’d met on the set of Rupert’s big screen debut Snow White and the Huntsman, with photos emerging after its release of the pair looking intimate in the back of a car.

Asked if he was worried the affair would undermine his position as Hollywood’s hottest new director, the filmmaker shrugged: “If you took people off the table for a momentary lapse there would be no one making art.”

It’s taken five years for Rupert to make another cinema movie though, with Ghost in the Shell marking his comeback after he wasn’t invited back to helm the second Snow White installment. Kristen also didn’t return to the franchise.

Ghost in the Shell, which also stars Juliette Binoche, is based on the classic anime tale, which first came out in 1995.

“We’d had a great reaction in Asia and that’s wonderful because, ultimately, we want it to be part of the legacy. You could tell that people were appreciative that we’d honored the original,” Rupert smiled.
