Distinguished Veteran British Actor Dead

Distinguished veteran British actor John Gielgud, who won a 1981 Oscar for playing proper butler to a sauced millionaire in the Dudley Moore comedy “Arthur,” has died, his family said today. He was 96. Gielgud died at his London-area home. Cause was not disclosed, but he was, like we said, 96. A theater legend, his TV and film career boasted 130 credits, including stops in: Laurence Olivier’s “Hamlet” (1948), Kenneth Branagh’s “Hamlet” (1996), and “Arthur 2: On the Rocks” (1988).

As an aside to “Star Wars” fans, Gielgud is not to be confused for (although he frequently was) fellow distinguished veteran British actor Alec Guiness (Obi-Wan), who is 86, and still alive.
