Drew Barrymore: ‘Losing weight for Santa Clarita Diet role revitalized me’

Drew Barrymore’s role as a zombie mom in Santa Clarita Diet inspired her to lose weight.
The Charlie’s Angels star plays a flesh-eating realtor on the quirky show and Barrymore explains she felt a sense of responsibility to her character, Sheila Hammond, to lose a little weight.

After booking the role, Drew began to work out and has since lost 20 pounds (nine kilograms).
“If a woman was eating just protein and nothing else she would lose weight,” she told U.S. breakfast show Today on Friday (16Mar18). “It gave me this intense sort of responsibility that I said I want to fulfil to be Sheila and then there were like no excuses.”

“It’s funny because it’s called Santa Clarita Diet, but its more than that with me for her,” she continued. “It’s like doing your hair and putting on nails and accessorizing. And Sheila has reminded me along the way that sometimes putting a little bit into yourself does make you feel more alive.”

Meanwhile, Drew, who is also a photographer and producer, has been building up her acting resume recently, and last month (Feb18) it was reported she will pull double duty by playing dual roles in her new film The Stand-In. Barrymore will play a washed-up movie star, who hires a lookalike to carry out community service in her place after she is convicted of tax evasion.

The project was presented to buyers at the European Film Market in Berlin, Germany last month.
She is also producing the series Black Rose Anthology, which will feature classic horror themes interwoven with issues including jealousy, repression, and guilt. It will air on America’s CW network.
