Jones won critical acclaim for his directorial debut Moon in 2009, which was followed by 2011 thriller Source Code, starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
Now he is set to oversee the $100 million ($62.5 million) adaptation of the hugely popular fantasy gaming franchise – his first big budget movie release.
A statement from Blizzard Entertainment, the company behind the games, reads, “We are pleased to announce that Duncan Jones, director of critically-acclaimed films Source Code and Moon, has signed on with Legendary Pictures to direct the upcoming live-action film based on the Warcraft universe.”
After the confirmation, Jones revealed his apprehension over the big task ahead, writing in a post on Twitter.com, “So the gauntlet was thrown down ages ago: Can you make a proper movie of a video game? I’ve always said it’s possible. Got to do it now!”
