Action man Dwayne Johnson is brushing off critics’ bad reviews of his new Baywatch movie revamp, insisting fan feedback has been all positive.

The wrestler-turned-movie star has taken over David Hasselhoff’s iconic TV role as head lifeguard Mitch Buchannon for the raunchy big screen adaptation, which also features Zac Efron and Priyanka Chopra, but critics haven’t been too kind to the project, which currently holds a score of just 20 per cent on review website Rotten Tomatoes.

However, early reactions from movie-goers have been more promising, with 65 per cent of viewers giving the film the thumbs up.

Dwayne used the differing opinions to underline the fact he made the film for fans, suggesting professional critics are out of touch with what movie-goers really want to see at the theatre.

He shared a link to the Rotten Tomatoes rating on Twitter on Thursday (25May17), and wrote, “Yay positive upticks. Fans LOVE the movie. Critics HATE it. What a glaring disconnect. People just want to laugh & have fun. #Baywatch.”

The Baywatch movie will face stiff competition at the North American box office this weekend (27-28May17) as it goes up against Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, but it received a promising headstart from Wednesday night (24May17) previews, earning $1.25 million.

Both films are expected to profit from its release on Memorial Day holiday weekend, with experts predicting Baywatch will easily swim past its early estimates of a $40 million (£31 million) gross.
