Ed Sheeran and One Direction Stars’ Solo Efforts Snubbed in Grammy Nominations

Ed Sheeran and the boys from One Direction received snubs when the 2018 Grammy Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday (28Nov17).

Ed’s record ÷ (divide) is the second biggest selling album of the year in the U.S. (17), behind only Taylor Swift’s Reputation, which was not eligible for nomination. Despite this the British singer-songwriter only earned two nods in pop categories – Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album.

That meant he missed out on a nomination for the biggest prizes, Album, Song, and Record of the Year – with hip-hop stars like JAY-Z and Kendrick Lamar gaining nods instead.

There was similar disappointment for One Direction fans, as despite the boys all making impressive solo debuts this year (17), but none of the members of the boyband – the group are currently on hiatus – were nominated for awards. The lack of nominations came despite Harry Styles‘ self-titled album winning critical praise upon its release in May (17), and the boys racking up a number of huge hits.

Former member Zayn Malik did receive a nod however, as his collaboration with Taylor Swift on I Don’t Wanna Live Forever, a track for the movie Fifty Shades Darker, was nominated in the Best Song Written for Visual Media.

Lady Gaga will also have suffered a disappointing morning as her heartfelt personal album Joanne only garnered two nominations.

The ultimate heartbreak was suffered by Katy Perry however, as the 33-year-old singer’s long wait for her first Grammy Award will continue for another year.

Her new album, Witness, released to much fanfare in June (17), fell flat with U.S. Recording Academy members, and she drew a blank in terms of nominations.

The 60th Grammy Awards ceremony will take place on 28 January (18) at New York’s Madison Square Garden venue. It will be broadcast on CBS.
