Ellen Degeneres won a prize for her talk show at the 2017 Daytime Emmys on Sunday (30Apr17).
The comedienne’s program The Ellen DeGeneres Show was named the winner of the Outstanding Talk Show – Entertainment prize, which the show has won six times since 2008, when the more specific category was created.
The 59-year-old’s win also came exactly 20 years to the day that she came out as gay on her sitcom Ellen on 30 April 1997, just two weeks after she posed for her infamous Time magazine cover with the headline, “Yep, I’m Gay.”
However, Ellen, who has won the Outstanding Talk Show Host – Entertainment a number of times in the past, wasn’t even nominated this year (17) and the award went to The Talk panellists Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Aisha Tyler and Sheryl Underwood.
The big winner was daytime medical drama General Hospital, which took four home prizes for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Drama Series Directing Team, Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series for Bryan Craig, and the actress equivalent for Lexi Ainsworth.
Soap opera The Young and the Restless came into the ceremony as the frontrunner with 25 nominations but only went home with three, including Outstanding Drama Series Writing Team,
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Gina Tognoni, and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Steve Burton.
Other acting winners included Scott Clifton and Jim O’Heir for lead actor and guest performer in soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful respectively, and Kate Mansi for supporting actress in Days of Our Lives.
Steve Harvey was another double winner with accolades for Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host for his self-titled show and Outstanding Game Show Host for Family Feud, which lost out on the Outstanding Game Show prize to Jeopardy!
Eat the World with Emeril Lagasse was named Outstanding Culinary Program, Good Morning America won Outstanding Morning Program, The Dr. Oz Show was the recipient of the Outstanding Talk Show – Informative, and the Outstanding Entertainment News Program went to Entertainment Tonight.
The 44th Daytime Emmys, hosted by Mario Lopez and Sheryl Underwood, were livestreamed on Facebook from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California.
