Ellen DeGeneres: ‘My Aunt Lost Everything in Hurricane’

Comedienne Ellen DeGeneres‘s family has been directly touched by Hurricane Katrina–her 82-year-old aunt has lost “everything” in the devastation.

Helen Currie was forced to quickly evacuate her home in Pass Christian,
Mississippi, as trail of destruction made its way from America’s Gulf Coast.

DeGeneres says, “My aunt has lost everything, she has nothing. She grabbed four pictures out of her house. She’s lost her entire life.”

Louisiana native DeGeneres recalls a childhood filled with weekends at her aunt’s home, just over the state line from New Orleans, which has also been
ravaged by Katrina.

She adds, “It’s where I grew up every weekend. I spent all my childhood
there. Pass Christian… is just gone. There’s not one building left–no
church, no nothing.”

DeGeneres is now talking to US TV networks about organizing a telethon to
raise funds for hurricane victims. She has also kick-started a fundraising
campaign on her self-titled chat show, with the aim of raising $1.5 million.

She notes, “Whether you have family there or not, it’s a devastating situation.”
