Elysium hits the top of the U.K. box office

Futuristic thriller Elysium has shot to the top spot at the U.K. box office on its opening weekend (23-25Aug13). The sci-fi movie, featuring Matt Damon as a space-age warrior, took $4.8 million (£3.1 million) in ticket sales, fighting off competition from another newcomer, We’re The Millers, in second place with $2.3 million (£1.5 million).
Animated comedy Planes is in third, with $1.8 million (£1.2 million), and the top five is rounded out by action adventure The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones ($1.7 million/£1.1 million) and comedy Grown Ups 2, which has kept its top five spot for the third week running ($1 million/£678,446).
