Evan Rachel Wood: ‘Actresses are scared to wear suits on the red carpet’

Evan Rachel Wood is adamant more actresses should wear suits on the red carpet.

The Westworld actress is known for her androgynous looks, almost always opting for trousers and a jacket rather than a gown when attending A-list bashes.

Most recently she dazzled in a white two-piece with flared trousers from Moschino at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday (17Sep17), with other stars including Oprah Winfrey and Claire Foy also wearing suits, but Evan insists not enough women feel confident to pull off the attire.

“I am sure if you asked a lot of actresses, they would like to wear suits and they are too afraid to do so,” she told The Hollywood Reporter, adding that she’s not a fan using the term “power dressing” when it comes to her outfits. “It’s like saying power is associated with dressing like a man instead of just feeling powerful in whatever you’re wearing.

Fashion expert Joseph Altuzarra joined the 30-year-old for the magazine interview, posing alongside Evan as part of the publication’s Top 20 Red Carpet Designers spread.

Like his client, Joseph doesn’t agree with the term “power suit”, calling it “antiquated” and he expressed he’s impressed by how much Evan is changing the world of Hollywood red carpet dressing.

“Evan took a huge risk (wearing only suits), and it paid off,” he smiled. “We are getting different kinds of requests from stylists, and actresses are thinking differently about what they’re going to wear. Our velvet blazers from the fall/winter collection – that are similar to one that Evan wore (at the Golden Globes) – have been selling out.”
