Fans name Yates best Potter director

Four different directors have helped bring author J.K. Rowling’s boy wizard books to life on the big screen over the past decade, but Yates has emerged as the clear fan favourite in a new MTV poll for NextMovie.com.

He took charge of the final four films – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Half-Blood Prince, and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Part 2 – and came out on top with 62 per cent of the votes.

Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets) came in a distant second with 18 per cent, while Alfonso Cuaron (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) earned 12 per cent, followed by Mike Newell (Goblet of Fire) with eight.

Meanwhile, Helena Bonham Carter’s Bellatrix Lestrange was named favourite villain, and the death of Professor Dumbledore (played by Michael Gambon since 2004), was voted the most unforgettable moment.

The final Harry Potter movie is released in America on Friday (15Jul11).
