Fashion & Style: The Best of 2011 Red Carpet Fashion

January Jones

January Jones electrified in bright blue at the Emmy Awards this past year, in this avant-garde Versace dress. The dress slightly resembles an exotic parrot, and January Jones' daring red carpet choices in 2011 definitely proved she’s a bird of a different feather.

Taylor Swift

A celebrity website held a poll earlier this year to vote on whether or not this gorgeous blue and cream tulle Reem Acra dress worn by Taylor Swift at the 2011 Nashville Symphony Ball was too “princessy.” As if there could be such a thing! Taylor Swift earned 45 million in 2011. As far as Hollywood.com is concerned, she’s earned her crown.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina always looks like a classic Hollywood starlet on the red carpet, but sometimes her choices are a bit basic for our taste. So when she stepped out in this sparkling, emerald, long-sleeved Versace gown at the Golden Globes, we were seeing green…in the best possible way.

Beyonce

While the rumor that Beyonce was fake pregnant was ridiculous, when we look at the sultry songstress in this drapey orange Lanvin goddess gown at the VMAs, we kind of understand how that idea got started. She looks too perfect to be real.

Elle Fanning

Sisters Elle and Dakota Fanning both graced the red carpet in the most graceful of ways this year—by spreading it with flowers. Here Elle makes our best dressed teen list at the wee age of 13 in this beautiful powder blue, tulle and daisy-drenched Marc Jacobs dress that manages to be both whimsical and age appropriate. To think she’s not even old enough to be prom queen!

Mila Kunis

Mila Kunis stole the show as the “dark” ballerina in Black Swan this year, but it was her choice of a pastel that made her really stand out on the red carpet. We can’t get enough of this ethereal, Elie Saab gown the talented actress wowed in at the Oscars.

Dakota Fanning

While she confessed to W Magazine that sister Elle often raids her closet, Dakota isn’t one to let her little sister show her up on the red carpet. She looks like a spring dream come true in this strapless, tulle-and-flower sprayed Valentino gown at 2011 MET Ball. Perhaps she and her sister are really fairies in (thin) disguise?

Christina Hendricks

Lavender was the color of choice on the red carpet in 2011, and it’s a shade that looks oh-so flattering on redheads—especially glamour-bomb Christina Hendricks. Girlfriend led the pack of ladies in lavender in this gorgeous, feathered dress at the Emmys. And what’s a pastel dress without a whole lotta cleavage?

Dita Von Teese
Dita Von Teese

Dita von Teese apparently doesn’t age. The Bettie Page-esque pin-up looked just as good in 2011 in her signature lux vintage style as she has in years past. Our favorite look from Dita this past year is this slinky silver asymmetrical gown, which she wore to a launch party. Per usual, the silver siren donned her raven locks and signature red lips.

Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan impressed us with her sweet dignity in Drive, starring opposite mancandy Ryan Gosling. She looks like a treat herself in this cap-sleeved, belted short dress, which she wore to the 2011 Palm Springs International Film Festival. We can’t wait to see how this rising star shines on both the silver screen and the red carpet in 2012.

Emma Stone

After her adorable role in Crazy Stupid Love, Emma Stone is fast becoming America’s comedic sweetheart. However, she was all sleek sophistication in a orange, modern Calvin Klein dress at the Golden Globes. We’ve never seen minimalist fashion look fiercer. You go, girl!

Evan Rachel Wood

It’s hard to make basic black look interesting, but actress Evan Rachel Wood succeeded this year in what the actress calls “the lost art” of the black dress. Here she shines like midnight in a floor-licking, sequined Elie Saab. The vintage finger waves give her a halo effect, or like a ring around the moon in the night sky.

Ryan Gosling

2011 was the year of Ryan Gosling—what with Crazy Stupid Love, the Ides of March, and Drive, Gosling raked in the big bucks and made the girls blush with his…great acting skills. Here he looks casually hot in a brown suit and sunglasses as he heads to the Late Show. We dig the rumpled sex hair too.

Jo Calderone
Jo Calderone
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
No man oozed bad boy attitude on the red carpet this year more than Jo Calderone, Lady Gaga’s drag alter ego at MTV’s VMAs. With his rockabilly pompadour, irreverent tshirt, and slouchy pants, Jo left women in puddles in their seats at the awards show. We only wish Barbara Walters would have interviewed Jo as one of the most fascinating celebrities of 2011.

Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani’s been ruling the red carpet since she was just a girl. Here Queen Gwen reigns again in a mermaid gown of her own L.A.M.B. design—to be auctioned off for charity—at an amFAR benefit. We love the glitter details, the slender gold belt, the feather purse, the slicked back hair—but mostly, we just love the Gwen.

Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams was incredible as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn, and if her red carpet choices are any indicator, the actress is well on her way to becoming an icon in Marilyn’s stratosphere. Here she looks impeccable at the Oscars in a long, curve-hugging white beaded Chanel gown. We love her white pixie haircut too.

Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Scarlett Johannson opted less for va-voom and more for delicately pretty on the red carpet this past year. Case in point: this cream, wispy-sleeved, lace Elie Saab dress. The blondest of them all practically floated down the red carpet at the Golden Globes.

Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Lady Gaga wowed the world yet again in 2011 with her avant-garde fashions as well as her award-winning album Born this Way. We’re pretty sure Gaga wasn’t born in this custom-made black and white, huge skirted Chanel dress, which the pop singer wore to her Barney’s Workshop opening in NYC. However, we’re glad she had it made. Classic Chanel has never looked more outrageous—or more fun.

Kate Middleton

New royal Kate Middleton stepped forth as a style darling in newlywed chic in 2011. Here she continues Princess Diana’s trend-setting legacy, but with a very English twist of her own in a quirky red Philip Treacy hat. We also love how she “accessorizes” with loving smiles for her new husband, who is always by her side. There is nothing more fashionable than true love!
