Frozen extinguishes Hunger Games’ fire at U.K. box office

Disney’s animated winter tale Frozen has put its rivals on ice to take the top spot at the U.K. box office, ending The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s two-week run at number one. The festive tale, which features the voices of Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, took $7.1 million (£4.7 million) in its opening weekend to push The Hunger Games: Catching Fire to second place with takings of $4 million (£2.7 million).
Sandra Bullock’s space drama Gravity fell from second to third place, earning $1.7 million (£1.1 million), while Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks, the story of how Mary Poppins was adapted for cinema, held on to the number four spot with $821,812 (£547,881).
Sylvester Stallone’s Homefront, starring Jason Statham and James Franco, rounded out the top five by taking $660,459 (£440,306) during its first weekend in British cinemas.
