Funeral held for Carroll O’Connor

Cardinal Roger Mahony, former All in the Family director Larry Hagman and the West Wing star Martin Sheen were among the attendees of the late actor Carroll O’Connor‘s funeral Tuesday in West Los Angeles, Calif. The 11 a.m. Mass was opened to the public and was held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 10750 Ohio Ave. The burial service was private.

“We were a family of four. And now we’re a family of three… I shared such an incredible time and space with Carroll,” said a tearful Sally Struthers, who played his daughter in the CBS series that lasted 13 seasons, according to City News Service.

“We always say that we do go to a better place, perhaps. But this will not be a better place for the loss of Carroll,” said Richard Crenna, a Hollywood mainstay for more than half a century.

O’Connor, 72, began suffering severe chest pains Thursday and went into a full cardiac arrest in his doctor’s office. He was rushed to Brotman Medical Center in Culver City, Calif., where he was pronounced dead. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Actor’s Fund of America, 5757 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 400, Los Angeles, 90036; the John Wayne Center Institute, 1328 22nd St., Santa Monica, 90404; or the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
