Gabrielle Union has suffered eight or nine miscarriages while trying to have a baby with husband Dwyane Wade.
The 44-year-old actress has been trying to fall pregnant with her NBA basketball player spouse for the past three years, and has undergone several rounds of vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.
But the process hasn’t been easy for Gabrielle, who revealed in an excerpt from her new book, We’re Going to Need More Wine, that she’s lost several babies while trying to start her family.
“I have had eight or nine miscarriages,” Gabrielle writes in the book, according to an excerpt obtained by People magazine. “For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant – I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.”
However, the tragedies haven’t put Gabrielle and Dwyane from trying again, with the Being Mary Jane star writing that she and her husband “remain bursting with love and ready to do anything to meet the child we’ve both dreamed of.”
Dwyane has two sons, Zaire, 15, and Zion, 10, from his first marriage, shares a three-year-old son named Xavier with former girlfriend Aja Metoyer, and also raises his 16-year-old nephew Dahveon.
And while Gabrielle didn’t see herself as a mother when she and Dwyane married in August 2014, becoming stepmother to his boys changed her outlook on children.
“I never wanted kids,” she shared. “Then I became a stepmom, and there was no place I’d rather be than with them.”
Gabrielle previously opened up to Redbook magazine about her struggles to fall pregnant, telling the publication: “So far, it has not happened for us. A lot of my friends deal with this. There’s a certain amount of shame that is placed on women who have perhaps chosen a career over starting a family younger. The penance for being a career woman is barrenness. You feel like you’re wearing a scarlet letter.”
