Geoffrey Rush to star in The Drowsy Chaperone movie

Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush is taking his Australian stage role in The Drowsy Chaperone to the big screen. The actor will produce and star in the movie adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, according to screenwriter Don McKellar, who let slip the big news while promoting his new film The Grand Seduction at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The Drowsy Chaperone first hit Broadway in 2006 and picked up Tonys for Best Book, Best Original Score, Best Featured Actress (Beth Leavel), Best Scenic Design & Best Costume Design.
BroadwayWorld.com notes it ran for almost 18 months in New York before hitting theatres around the globe. Rush starred in the Melbourne Theatre Company’s smash-hit production in 2010.
