A writer and director has not been announced and it is unclear when the movie will go into production, however, this is not the first Carmen Sandiego project for Rodriguez – she has also signed on to voice the character in a new animated series, which is set to hit streaming site Netflix in 2019. According to previous reports, the actress will star in 20 episodes.

Lynne Thigpen voiced Sandiego in a TV series from 1991 to 1995, while Jennifer Lopez also reportedly picked up the rights to the video game franchise in 2011 in a bid to produce and potentially star in a movie about the red-coated criminal, but the project never came to fruition.

Meanwhile, Gina is also set to star in a Hollywood remake of Mexican thriller Miss Bala and she is proud the film is helping to pave the way for Hispanics in the industry.

“I have so much pride for the work I have been blessed to be part of, including my latest film, Sony’s Miss Bala,” she wrote in a Variety article in January (18). “Not only does this film have a female Latino lead and other amazing Latino talent but we also filmed in Mexico with a 95 per cent Latino crew. I sincerely thank and applaud Sony for being one of the leader’s in trying to move the needle forward.”
