Golden Globes 2012: Best and Worst of Red Carpet Fashion

Sofia Vergara's blue, strapless Vera Wang mermaid gown was one of many mermaid gowns of the night--but she definitely looked sexy in it. Sexy enough to win a Golden Globe!

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Angelina Jolie

This risky Atelier Versace gown with red detailing would have been all wrong on anyone else—it would have looked like a bridesmaid’s dress. But on Angelina Jolie it looks radiant. We love the pop of the red purse and her red lips. We’re not, however, crazy about her severe chignon hairdo.

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Claire Danes
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Claire Danes

Claire Danes took a major fashion risk on the red carpet in this open-backed, graphic black and white J Mendel gown...and that risk paid off with her win of the night for her role in Homeland! Congratulations, Ms. Danes.

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Dianna Agron
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Dianna Agron
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Diana Agron was one of several actresses to wear red on the red carpet—but she was only one who really put the lady in “lady in red.” We absolutely adore the Glee star’s Oriental-inspired, intricately detailed Giles dress.

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Evan Rachel Wood
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Evan Rachel Wood
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Evan Rachel Wood has become one of Hollywood’s fiercest fashion risk-takers, and her dark green sequined and feathered Gucci Premiere gown was no exception. She’s definitely a bird of a different (expensive, glamorous) feather.

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Lea Michele
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Lea Michele
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Lea Michele’s revealing, metallic dress was one of the sexiest dresses of the night and also had the most interesting detailing. Her smoky eyes and dark hair offset the Marchesa illusion dress wonderfully. Fashion is all a beautiful illusion, isn’t it?

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Natalie Portman
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Natalie Portman
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Natalie Portman’s Audrey Hepburn meets Marilyn Monroe look is a lot of fun. We’re loving the pink Lanvin custom-made dress, but she could have used a gorgeous diamond choker or a clutch to make the retro-inspired look more “classic movie star” fabulous.

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Nicole Richie
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Nicole Richie
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Nicole Richie dazzled in the most glam look of the night, as far as we’re concerned. Her shimmering Julien McDonald silver dress and her own House of Harlow clutch were pure 70’s chic with a contemporary edge. We’re also loving the bangs trend that’s taking over Hollywood.

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Octavia Spencer
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Octavia Spencer
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Octavia Spencer was another big winner of the night, for her role in The Help. Her lavender dress was simple and awards-worthy, even though she didn't look totally comfortable in it. Cheer up, Octavia--you're a winner and you deserve to wear beautiful couture!

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Kelly Osbourne
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Kelly Osbourne
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
We realize this is a controversial claim, but Kelly Osbourne’s silvery hair and blue Zac Posen gown were our second favorite look of the night. She brought a refreshing touch of English whimsy to an otherwise pretty straight-laced American awards night.

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Charlize Thoron
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Charlize Thoron
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Young Adult star Charlize Theron’s pale Dior gown was one of the most unique looks at the 2012 Golden Globes, although it is reminiscent of many of her avant-garde cuts of red carpets past. As is usually the case with Charlize, the gown isn’t fitted quite as well as it could be—but no one can deny that the 36-year-old actress’ bod is banging.
12
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Michelle Williams
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Michelle Williams
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Michelle Williams took home the same award Marilyn Monroe won years ago, but she unfortunately wasn’t channeling the bombshell on the red carpet tonight. While we like the cut of her dress, her darling pixie cut, and her headband, the dark blue print is pretty ugly. At least she channeled Marilyn’s total glamour in My Week with Marilyn.

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Tilda Swinton
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Tilda Swinton
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Tilda Swinton looked sleek and sophisticated in a powder blue dress and jacket by Haider Ackermann. Her hair was reminiscent of another style risk-taker—Lady Gaga. Do you think she was born this way?
14
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Ariel Winter
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Ariel Winter
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Modern Family star Ariel Winter looked age-appropriate and fun in her Dolce and Gabbana deep purple princess dress. The tulle petticoat is the perfect touch for the 13-year-old up and coming star. She also wears heels better than women three times her age.

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Brad Pitt
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Brad Pitt
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Brad Pitt said it was a golden night for he and Angie—perhaps that’s why he dressed like a classic movie star, channeling Charlie Chaplin with his cane and bow-tie. We love that he’s bringing Hollywood’s golden era to the Golden Globes, even though we could do without his stringy hairdo.

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Elle Macpherson
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Elle Macpherson
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
While just about every actress wore a fishtail gown on the red carpet at this year’s Globes, Elle Macpherson takes the (fish)cake for the most decadent tail of the night. We actually like the 80’s vibe of this severely-cut tulle explosion—and Elle has the fun personality to carry it off. Looking good, mermaid!

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Heidi Klum
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Heidi Klum
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
We like Heidi Klum’s custom-made nude Calvin Klein dress much more than most of the distracting looks she usually wears on the red carpet. The dress is sexy and allows her to show off her great tan and great smile. The color of her turquoise necklace also adds a striking contrast to the gown. You’re “in,” Heidi!

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Paula Patton
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Paula Patton
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Paula Patton was one of several starlets to try and reign as Queen Bee on the red carpet in hot yellow tonight. The look and color of her Monique Lhullier dress reminds us too much of a glammed up version of a high school choir dress, but we can’t blame the girl for wanting to be Queen.

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Rooney Mara
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Rooney Mara
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Rooney Mara is definitely Hollywood’s fashion minimalist. Her semi-futiristic, gothic look has remained consistent and consistently compelling. This pre-fall 2012 Nina Ricci with peek-a-bow detailing makes just the right impact, even though it isn’t exactly a surprising choice for the Dragon Tattoo star.
20
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Sarah Michelle Gellar
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Sarah Michelle Gellar
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Here’s a classic case of a dress wearing an actress, instead of an actress wearing a dress. This blue and white tie-dye gown by Monique Lhuillier probably looked gorgeous on the runway, but it doesn’t suit Sarah Michelle. However, we heard she let her 2-year-old pick it out for her, and you know how much kids love tie-dye! It’s just like coloring.

Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Zooey Deshanel
Golden Globes Fashion 2012: Zooey Deshanel
Kate Durbin (Commentary)/ Hollywood.com
Zooey Deshanel’s 60’s style bouffant and bangs hairdo is so cute we almost don’t care what she’s wearing. Her custom-made black and green Prada gown is more grown up than a lot of the cutesy looks Zooey usually wears, but we aren’t totally nuts about it. What’s so wrong with cute after all?
