The former Ally McBeal star was determined to land the role opposite Ed Helms and John C. Reilly and went all out to get it – even donning a fiery red wig when she first met director Miguel Arteta.
She says, “I think every girl in Hollywood wanted the role and I’m really lucky that I got it. I think it’s because I went red. I walked in with a wig… I thought she should be a redhead and he said, ‘Let’s do it’.
“I’ve never put on a wig before… I felt like I had been out in the world a lot as a blonde and I felt like a Mid-Western woman needed to look like she would put something in her hair at the (bargain hotel chain) Motel 6 right before going and meeting the guys, and it just seemed like bottled red was the way to go.”
Heche plays a racy veteran insurance convention regular in the movie.
