Imelda Staunton’s Gypsy to transfer to Broadway

Producers behind Imelda Staunton’s West End run in Gypsy are in talks to take the musical revival to Broadway.
The Harry Potter star took on the Momma Rose role at the Chichester Festival Theatre in England last year (14) before the production transferred to London’s Savoy Theatre, where it opened to rave reviews in April (15).
Staunton has completed more than 300 performances and will bow out on Saturday night (28Nov15), and co-producer Michael Harrison is already in negotiations to take the show to Broadway, where Gypsy first debuted in 1959.
“We are actively pursuing and trying to work out the right way to go to New York with Imelda in Gypsy,” Harrison tells Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper.
The news comes just days after the role earned Staunton the Best Performance in a Musical prize at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards on Sunday (22Nov15).
