Irish stars rally together for Christy Dignam fundraiser

Irish rockers U2 and Shane Macgowan were among the acts who took the stage on Friday (21Jun13) for a fundraiser benefiting cancer-stricken Aslan frontman Christy Dignam. A Night for Christy at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin was organised to help the singer, who was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer in March (13).
Homegrown stars Niall Breslin, Paul Brady, Mary Black, Jedward, Gavin Friday, Jerry Fish, The Coronas’ Danny O’Reilly, Don Mescall, and Ryan Sheridan all performed live covers of Aslan’s hits, while U2 appeared via a video link.
Dignam’s daughter Kiera tells the Irish Independent her father was given a huge boost by the gig, as well as the acts’ rehearsals held over the last week (begs17Jun13).
Kiera says, “The last couple of days he’s been in great form, and during the rehearsals he looked great. We were a bit concerned that by the time the gig came around he might struggle a bit, but he’s loving it all.”
Proceeds generated by the concert will be used to help fund Dignam’s chemotherapy treatments.
