J.K. Rowling hits out at British government

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has blasted the U.K. government, insisting the ruling politicians are out of touch with struggling families. Rowling has fired a shot at the the coalition, which is made up of the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties, urging them to focus on helping the less fortunate into work rather than hitting them with more benefit cuts.
The author, who is also president of single parent support group Gingerbread, says, “The government mantra that work is the best route out of poverty is ringing increasingly hollow, with nearly one in three children whose single parent works part-time still growing up in poverty.
“Rather than focusing on ever more austerity measures, it’s investment in single-parent employment that will allow single parents to work their own way out of poverty and secure real savings from the welfare bill.”
The author, who struggled financially as a single mother before her Harry Potter series earned her millions, adds, “I find the language of ‘skivers versus strivers’ particularly offensive when it comes to single parents, who are already working around the clock to care for their children.”
