Veteran actor James Woods has chosen to ignore the growing controversy surrounding Amber Tamblyn’s allegation he once tried to hit on the then-16-year-old and take her to Las Vegas.
Tamblyn made the claim on Twitter after outspoken conservative Woods publicly slammed Armie Hammer’s new gay romance film Call Me By Your Name, which revolves around the relationship between a 24-year-old academic and his professor’s 17-year-old son.
On Monday (10Sep17), the Shark star reposted a critical tweet from author Chad Felix Greene, who had also attacked the movie’s plot, and teased his comments by writing, “As they quietly chip away the last barriers of decency,” linking his remark to the North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA), an organization which believes pedophilia without coercion should be decriminalized.
Hammer responded directly to Woods by calling out the 70-year-old’s hypocrisy and noting he had previously dated 19-year-old Ashley Madison, writing: “Didn’t you date a 19 year old when you were 60…?”
Tamblyn decided to weigh in on the brewing Twitter feud, by offering up her own memories of an alleged encounter with Woods when she was just a teen.
“James Woods tried to pick me and my friend up at a restaurant once,” she tweeted. “He wanted to take us to Vegas. ‘I’m 16’ I said. ‘Even better’ he said.”
Woods hit back at The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants actress, dismissing her recollection as “a lie”, but Tamblyn is refusing to back down, responding to the denial by quipping, “Life comes at you fast, James.”
Tamblyn, 34, also shared a photo of her text message exchange with the friend who had reportedly witnessed the failed pick-up attempt. He had reminded her of the night in question after reading about the Twitter exchange between Hammer and Woods.
“Since I know people love to question the intengrity (sic) and honesty of women when they come forward with stories like this, here you go,” she captioned the image.
Her accusation has become headline news, with even her husband, comedian David Cross and Don Cheadle coming to Tamblyn’s defense on social media, but Woods is doing his best to move on from the drama, claiming his remark about Call Me By Your Name wasn’t intended as a direct criticism of Hammer.
“Somebody told me the libs (liberals) are yelping (over his initial tweet). Troll traffic is up,” he wrote. “I don’t pay any attention really. I like Armie Hammer as an actor though. A lot.”
