Janet Jackson Surprised Missy Elliott with Essence Award

Janet Jackson surprised Missy Elliott by presenting her with an Essence Black Women In Music award.

The publication launched its awards ceremony back in 2010 to recognize the accomplishments of artists and influencers during Grammy week, and though the Work It rapper knew she was a winner on Thursday night (25Jan18), she had no idea that her friend Janet would be bestowing her with the honor.

“Some rhyme, some rap; some act, some choreograph; some write hit songs; some create whole new sounds. Some women are able to make her mark in some of these fields; but there’s only one woman who has made her mark in all of these fields,” Janet proudly announced to the crowd.

“Not only have you made your mark, but she’s done so with boldness and courage.”
The musicians shared an emotional embrace on stage, with Missy, real name Melissa Arnette Elliott, visibly overwhelmed by Janet’s praise.

“That was a surprise,” admitted the 46-year-old. “I’ve known Janet over a decade and this is not just someone I do music with. I can call Janet any time of night and she will listen. The times that I may have felt like giving up, she’s always gave me an encouraging word.”

The four-time Grammy winner went on to thank Essence for the accolade, and also shared some inspiring words with the audience.

Essence magazine has over the decades shown me what strong power black women look like and I appreciate that,” she shared. “I want all of you women in here to know that you’re beautiful. You gotta believe in yourself. Because there are going to be times that people tell you you can’t do it or you don’t look the part, but I am a walking testimony.”

The rapper was cheered on by celebrities in the audience at the Highline Ballroom in New York City, including Janelle Monae, T.I. and Orange Is the New Black actress Danielle Brooks.
