Jared Leto has been named as the chief creative officer of film streaming service Fandor.

In his role, the Academy Award-winning actor and filmmaker will be the “creative voice” for the California-based company, which specialises in independent films, documentaries, foreign features and shorts.

Leto will provide ongoing creative input for the platform, including original programming, and will host one of Fandor’s live streaming events slated for later this year (17). Fandor will also utilize the Dallas Buyers Club star’s on-demand media streaming platform VyRT, which he founded in 2011 as a cross between content and social media.

“As a longtime Fandor subscriber I developed a special appreciation for their distinctive programming and recommendation engine. Specifically, the ‘human element’ that sets Fandor apart from so many other services in this space, most of which are purely algorithmic,” he said in a statement. “With my involvement in the broadcasting and social platform business for over five years with my company, VyRT, I’m very much looking forward to this collaboration and know I can bring a unique perspective (to it).”

Fandor is a subscription-based service and offers nearly 6,000 titles across 500 genres. The company has recently remodeled its digital site and is currently expanding content syndication.

Fandor’s president and chief executive officer Larry Aidem added that he is thrilled to welcome the 45-year-old to the team and praised his “multi-dimensional” artistry, as both an actor and the frontman of band Thirty Seconds to Mars.

Jared joins us at a critical time in Fandor’s evolution. With the launch of our new look and feel on and off the Fandor platform, we are ready to move to series production. Jared brings his love of movies, his passion for music, and his keen eye to Fandor’s audience,” he shared.
