Jazz star Fred Ho dead at 56

Jazz star Fred Ho has lost his battle with colorectal cancer at the age of 56. The saxophonist passed away on Saturday (12Apr14) in Brooklyn, New York, according to the New York Times.
Ho was best known for his musical works which dealt with subjects including Chinese folklore, physical combat and domestic abuse.
In 1989, his opera, A Chinaman’s Chance, was performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
He went on to write several operas, including Journey to the West and Journey Beyond the West: The New Adventures of Monkey, which were based on Wu Ch’eng-en’s novel Monkey.
In addition to his music, Ho co-edited two books, Legacy to Liberation: Politics and Culture of Revolutionary Asian Pacific America and Sounding Off! Music as Subversion/ Resistance/ Revolution.
