Jenni Rivera’s family denied motion for discovery in lawsuit with former manager

A judge has denied late singer Jenni Rivera’s family’s request to move forward with a lawsuit against her former manager over a TV show.
Rivera’s estate executors launched a lawsuit against Pete Salgado in September (16), after he revealed he is working on “the untold story” of his late client for Spanish-language network Univision.
They filed papers in California Superior Court in Los Angeles, claiming only estate executors and Jenni’s kids have “the sole right whether and/or how such information about their mother may be revealed”. They also alleged Salgado signed a 2013 non-disclosure agreement, in which he pledged not to reveal “any information to anyone about Ms. Rivera, her family or the company managing her assets”.
The family was hoping to move forward with seven depositions to gather evidence for the discovery process, but the motion was halted after Salgado filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing his TV show, titled Su verdadero nombre era Dolores (Her Real Name Was Dolores), is an expression of free speech, which is protected under the U.S. Constitution.
Salgado is also challenging the authenticity of the non-disclosure agreement.
Rivera’s family is currently working on its own biographical series with Telemundo executives, four years after the Mexican-American star, real name Dolores Janney Rivera, was killed in a plane crash at the age of 43.
