Joan Smalls is designing a range of luxury swimwear and lingerie for Smart & Sexy.

The Puerto Rican model has teamed up with the brand, known for its intimates, on a new line set to go on sale on Smart & Sexy’s official website and in Walmart stores in spring 2018.

Joan worked closely alongside the label’s founder and chief executive Ariela Balk on the range, having already been tapped as the face of the brand’s spring 17 campaign.

“I fell in love with the brand and the fact that they cater to women of all sizes at affordable pricing,” Joan told Business of Fashion. “Ariela Balk really impressed me and I found a great admiration for her as a businesswoman. When it comes to design, we agree in many aspects and we both are super excited about the collaboration.”

The admiration is mutual, with Ariela praising the Victoria’s Secret star and her “eye for fashion”.
“She understands that you have to make women of all shapes look beautiful,” Ariela added. “She also shares that philosophy that you don’t just make an item because it was on the runway and it’s the trend item of the moment.”

The entrepreneur feels confident that the new venture will help boost the growth of Smart & Sexy, which Ariela founded 10 years ago after launching its parent company Ariela & Associates in 1997.

This exciting opportunity for Joan comes after it was announced the model would be making her acting debut in upcoming Netflix movie Set It Up, appearing opposite Zoey Deutch and Lucy Liu. The 28-year-old shared her excitement at the project with a post on social media last week (ends25Jun17), writing, “Words cannot describe this feeling! So extremely lucky and honored to be part of such an insanely talented cast and team. Thank you to EVERYONE who made this posible (sic) #SetitUp #Netflix Can’t wait for you all to see.”
