Joanna Lumley stands by binge drinking comments

British actress Joanna Lumley has been inundated with messages of support since speaking out to warn young women about the dangers of binge drinking. The Absolutely Fabulous star hit headlines in January (13) when she urged fellow British females to stop boozing to excess on nights out because they leave themselves open to sex predators and thieves.
She accused some young women of dressing “like trash” and added, “I promise you it is better to look after yourself properly… don’t be sick in the gutter at midnight in a silly dress with no money to get a taxi home, because somebody will take advantage of you, either they’ll rape you, or they’ll knock you on the head or they’ll rob you.”
Her comments caused a backlash from some quarters, with several critics in the U.K. accusing Lumley of implying women need to do more to ensure their safety, but Lumley insists she had plenty of support over her remarks.
She tells British magazine OK!, “I have all kinds of letters from parents who have said: ‘Thank God – somebody has got to tell them!’ I mean, I loathe boys getting drunk too – but the truth is that it’s the girls who carry the can for everything.
“It upsets me so much to see these girls staggering around without a friend to help them out. I don’t think it does you good as a girl to look like that. It’s not good for us women.”
Former Bond girl Lumley famously played heavy drinking fashionista Patsy Stone in Absolutely Fabulous.
