Joe Johnston has signed on to direct upcoming movie Narnia: The Silver Chair.

The filmmaker, who helmed 1995’s Jumanji and 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, will spearhead a new chapter in the franchise based on C.S. Lewis’ novel series The Chronicles of Narnia.

For the installment, TriStar Pictures is collaborating with the Mark Gordon Company, the C.S. Lewis Company, and Entertainment One.

Speaking about the project, Mark Gordon shared he’s thrilled that Johnston agreed to helm the flick.

Joe is a wonderful storyteller who is equally at home in the biggest franchises and the most intimate character pieces,” he told Variety. “Because C.S. Lewis’ story is iconic and epic, but also tender, personal, and emotional, he’s the perfect choice to bring The Silver Chair to the screen.”

Gordon will also be producing the film, alongside Vincent Sieber, Melvin Adams and Lewis‘ stepson Douglas Gresham, while Life of Pi and Finding Neverland screenwriter David Magee is adapting the script.

The Silver Chair will follow on from the events of 2010’s The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which was directed by Michael Apted, and follows school friends Eustace Scrubb and Jill Pole as they try to find the rightful heir to the Narnian throne.

The first three movies in the series, including The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian, starred Liam Neeson, Tilda Swinton, Georgie Henley and Will Poulter. Disney distributed the first two films, with Fox overseeing Voyage of the Dawn Treader, with the three flicks grossing nearly $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office.

Lewis‘ series of fantasy novels are considered children’s literature classics, having been published in 47 languages and sold 100 million-plus copies worldwide.
