John Cena proud of Darren Young for becoming first openly gay wrestler

Sportsman-turned-actor John Cena has applauded Darren Young for going public with his sexuality, insisting he is “proud” of his pal for becoming the first openly gay wrestler. The 29-year-old World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar ‘came out’ as a gay man during an interview with TMZ.com on Wednesday (14Aug13) and although the news came as a surprise to Cena, the 12 Rounds action man is happy for Young.
He tells TMZ, “I know Darren personally, he’s a great guy. That’s a very bold move for him and congratulations for him for actually doing it, good for him.”
Cena is convinced Young’s personal confession will not change anything for him in regards to his relationships with fellow wrestlers, as long as he continues to perform to his usual high standard.
He says, “It doesn’t affect his work, he’s a wonderful worker in the ring… It’s all about being professional; Darren Young is a consummate professional. I’m actually proud of him… Kudos to him for being, I believe, the first (openly gay wrestler)…
“For us, it’s entertainment and if you’re entertaining, you shouldn’t be judged by race, creed, colour or sexuality, as long as you’re entertaining, that’s the most important thing.”
