Wrestler-turned-actor John Cena is holding out hope for a reunion with his ex-fiancee Nikki Bella after having a change of heart about his opposition to starting a family.
The Trainwreck star and his fellow wrestler called it quits in mid-April (18), just weeks before they were set to become husband and wife.
Reports indicated one of the main reasons for the split was John’s refusal to have children, despite Nikki’s dreams of one day becoming a mother.
During a candid conversation on breakfast show Today on Monday (14May18), John claimed he didn’t see the break-up coming, and he’s been through a lot of emotional ups and downs since Nikki called off their engagement.
“It’s been up and it’s been down,” he explained to co-hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. “It’s been incredibly reflective, which is amazing, but it’s very difficult.
“I had my heart broken out of nowhere – well, for me it was out of nowhere. And anyone who has experienced that knows that it comes with a series of bad feelings. But I’ve looked at myself every day and I’ve tried to evaluate myself and the woman that I love.”
The 41-year-old went on to dismiss rumours suggesting he is enjoying the single life, insisting he just wants to do whatever it takes to make Nikki happy, because he is not interested in dating anyone else.
“I still love Nicole, I still would love to marry Nicole, I still would love to have a family with Nicole…,” he said, explaining they are still talking to try and work things out. “I don’t want anybody else. I love Nicole and I’m really trying to support her in her trying to find whatever it is she wants that made this fall apart in the first place…”
Acknowledging his change of heart regarding kids, John realises he stuck to the decision he made during his youth “out of stubbornness”: “It took a very strong look in the mirror for me to be like, ‘Why (don’t I want kids)? This is person is my number one and it’s something that’s very valuable to her. Of course we can do this, and I think it would be wonderful,'” he added.
“She’s my number one and I want to make her happy…,” he shared. “I love her. I want to be with her. I want to make her my wife. I want to be the father of her children. I just want us to work.”
John and Nikki began dating in late 2012, and they became engaged at the Wrestlemania 33 event in April, 2017.
