John Legend credits Common for helping him achieve EGOT

John Legend thanked Common for helping him achieve EGOT status.

The 39-year-old singer added to his Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards after taking home the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sunday (09Sep18).

John was an executive producer for the TV special, in which he also starred.

Humbled by his win, John told Entertainment Tonight that he would not have achieved EGOT without Common, with whom he won the Best Song Oscar for their track Glory for the movie Selma in 2015.

“I wouldn’t have an EGOT without Common,” Legend said, and added it wouldn’t have been possible “without Selma and that song.”

Common also shared his thoughts on his friend and collaborator’s historical and “inspiring” achievement, and revealed he was honored to just know someone who has joined the unofficial EGOT club.

“It’s really surreal. I mean, it’s inspiring. I believe he’s the first black male to get that EGOT status and that’s just amazing,” the 46-year-old rapper said. “To even know somebody that has an EGOT is incredible… I’m just grateful.”

Despite making history, the 39-year-old is more concerned with his accomplishments in his personal life with his family – wife Chrissy Teigen, two-year-old daughter Luna and three month old son Miles.

“I love being a father, (and) love being a husband,” the multi-talented musician gushed. “I love just being a musician and getting to do what I love to do every day, which is write and perform songs and hopefully make people’s lives a little better by the music and art that we create.”
