John Waters became a minister to marry Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder

Johnny Depp’s lawyers helped his Cry Baby director John Waters become an ordained minister so he could marry the movie star and Winona Ryder at the premiere.
The quirky filmmaker staged the charity screening at the Senator Theatre in his native Baltimore, Maryland back in 1990 and was all set to make Winona, then 18, the first Mrs Depp.
“Winona Ryder had become his girlfriend while we shot the film,” Waters writes in his upcoming autobiography, Mr. Know-It-All: The Tarnished Wisdom of a Filth Elder. “Before we wrapped, Johnny’s lawyers had done the paperwork to get me ordained as a minister in the Universal Life Church, because the couple wanted me to perform the marriage ceremony. I gently talked them out of it because Winona was so young.
“Her parents thanked me, but who knows maybe it would have worked! I’ve married 15 other couples, both straight and gay, and only one has ended up in divorce. I have a better track record at the pulpit than I do at the box office.”
