Jordin Sparks sings at prom for Sandy-hit school

R&B star Jordin Sparks performed at a prom in New York on Thursday (20Jun13) for students whose high school was wrecked by superstorm Sandy last year (12). Teens from storm-ravaged East Rockaway High School were treated to a fairy-tale formal at a lavish estate on Long Island and wore designer gowns and tuxedos donated by fashion website RentTheRunway.com, but the highlight of the night came when former American Idol winner Sparks stepped onstage as a surprise special guest.
She performed three songs for the crowd and invited a boy onstage during a rendition of her track No Air, before giving him a peck on the cheek.
Sparks, who was home-schooled, later told the New York Daily News, “I didn’t get to kiss anyone at my prom, but I took my brother as my date, so kissing him would have been weird.”
Glee singer/actor Darren Criss attended the event with 17-year-old student Molly Bastow, who won a dream prom contest for her school by writing an essay detailing the devastation caused by Sandy.
Criss, who performed four acoustic covers for fans, says, “It was a no-brainer. What a lovely thing to do after these kids have been through so much.”
