Karl Lagerfeld Apologizes For Calling Adele ‘Fat’

Adele singingOn Monday, it was widely reported that Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld remarked that while Adele has a “divine voice,” the singer is “too fat.” Those remarks, made to France’s Metro newspaper, immediately sparked some serious ire from Adele fans around the world (and with 19 straight weeks at number one on the Billboard charts, Adele’s got quite a few of them). Now, Lagerfeld is apologizing for his insensitive remarks…sort of.

In another interview with Metro, Lagerfeld said, “I’d like to say to Adele that I am your biggest admirer. Sometimes when you take a sentence out of the article, it changes the meaning of the thought. What I said was in relation to Lana Del Rey and the sentence has since been taken out of context from how it was originally published.” Lagerfeld is referring the comments he made about overnight musical sensation Lana Del Rey, whose album settled nicely at number two to Adele’s number one slot on the charts. The designer’s original comments about Adele were packaged with his comparison between her and Lana Del Rey: “The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice. Lana del Rey is not bad at all. She looks very much like a modern-time singer. In her photos she is beautiful. Is she a construct with all her implants? She’s not alone with implants.” Thanks for clarifying, Mr. Lagerfeld, but even in context these comments seem just a little shallow. But at least he’s Adele’s biggest admirer – even if he’s not down with the shape of her body.

Still, he made sure to take his admiration a little further, adding that his comment about her weight comes from his own struggle. He said, “I actually prefer Adele, she is my favorite singer and I am a great admirer of her. I lost over 30 kilos over 10 years ago and have kept it off. I know how it feels when the press is mean to you in regards to your appearance. Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can’t wait for her next CD.” So, there you have it, Adele: you’re better than Lana Del Rey, but Lagerfeld still won’t step off the weight issue even when he’s being nice about it.

Luckily for the beloved singer, body image isn’t something she worries about. She’s famously been quoted saying she’s in no hurry to be skinny, most recently telling People magazine, “I’ve never wanted to look like the models on the cover of magazines. I represent the majority of women and I’m very proud of that.” Talk about taking the high road. She didn’t say a word about the outspoken designer. Lagerfeld certainly tried to apologize, but perhaps it’s best if he just avoids the weighty issue altogether. The sultry songstress clearly doesn’t give any merit to these sorts of discussions. It’s just another reason women everywhere will continue to tout the 23-year-old as a heroine.
