Kate Winslet breaks down accepting humanitarian award

Kate Winslet was moved to tears on Thursday (09Nov17) as she saluted a British cancer survivor whose life she helped to save.
The Titanic star was honoured with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Actors Inspiration Award, in recognition of her acting achievements and her philanthropy work, at the organisation’s second annual awards show, held in Beverly Hills, California.
Kate, who was accompanied to the event by her husband Ned Rocknroll, was introduced to the stage by her Titanic and Revolutionary Road co-star Kathy Bates, who highlighted her close friend’s charitable endeavours with her autism awareness non-profit, the Golden Hat Foundation.
As the 42-year-old actress took to the podium to accept her award, she also opened up about another cause she personally adopted last year (16) – that of Gemma Nuttall, a 28-year-old British woman with stage 4 cancer, which had spread to her brain and lungs.
Kate helped to raise more than $394,000 (£300,000) last year (16) by publicising her plight to enable the mum-of-one to receive specialist immunotherapy treatment in Germany after she was told there was nothing more British doctors could do for her, and the star struggled to maintain her composure as she revealed Gemma was recently declared “cancer-free”.
Bates wasn’t the only Titanic star Kate reunited with at the event – also in attendance were Frances Fisher, who played her mother in the disaster epic, and Rochelle Rose, who portrayed The Countess of Rothes.
Other guests at the bash, where director Kathryn Bigelow was also honoured, included filmmaker Judd Apatow, singer Lionel Richie and his model daughter Sofia Richie.
The SAG-AFTRA Foundation is the charitable arm of the Screen Actors Guild/AFTRA labour union and helps actors with health and financial challenges, as well as providing scholarships, career support and book-reading programmes for underprivileged children.
