Kathie Lee lawsuit settled out of court

Palm Beach County, Fla., Circuit Judge Timothy McCarthy formally dismissed a libel case last week after Kathie Lee Gifford and her husband, Frank Gifford, settled out of court with supermarket tabloid National Examiner three months ago, the Associated Press reports.

The case came about when Boca Raton, Fla.-based National Examiner ran a February 2000 article titled, “Kathie Lee Wrecking Cody’s Life! Pushy Mom’s Creating a Monster.”

In April of the same year, the former Live with Regis & Kathie Lee star and her husband sued for libel, saying the claims in the article were false.

National Examiner, which is owned by American Media Inc., published an apology in August 2001, saying, “We regret any distress or embarrassment that Cody may have experienced,” and AMI spokesman Gerald McKelvey said, “We are satisfied with the amicable resolution of this matter.”

Terms of the settlement are not available to the public.
